Hi, I'm completely new to all this but I had an idea for an E-commerce website, so I picked up this book:
"Beginning PHP 5 and MySQL E-Commerce: From Novice to Professional"
which recommended using Smarty templates and PEAR.
That's great.. but my hosting company does not provide either of these softwares so I asked them to install for me.
In their reply they said the following:
"Thank you for contacting us. Unfortunately you cannot use "Smarty" and "PEAR" for programming my website/E-shop as the required libuarys and components are not installed on the server. The server admin team will not install these or any other custom components on for you as they could affect all customers on the server."
Hmmm.... what is going on here?!
Please, does anyone have any comments to make on this? or able to suggest alternative solutions for me?
Any help is of course much appreciated.

There no reason why you can't install Smarty and/or PEAR yourself in a local directory. Just make sure you use the right paths when including them. |
